When to ask for a frequency change?

This article will help you understand when to send the "Request frequency change".

In most cases, you should not ask for a frequency change. Unless you are about to enter an airspace without clearance from the current frequency, do not ask for a frequency change.

Here is a quick breakdown for Frequency Changes on certain frequencies:

  • Ground to Tower
Do not ask for frequency change from ground to tower. Just switch to tower frequency when approaching the runway, and only ask for take off when 1st in line.
  • Tower to Ground
Do not ask for a frequency change to the tower
  • Tower to Departure/Approach/Center
Do not ask, just switch to those frequencies once you're 2 to 5 miles away.
  • Tower to Any other Frequency
Do not ask, just switch to those frequencies once you're 2 to 5 miles away.
  • Approach/Departure/Center to Any other Frequency
Do not change frequency while being guided on an ILS approach. Stay with the controller until you are cleared to switch to another frequency.
